Getting Started
What’s in the box?
In the Sony Xperia Z box you will find:
- Sony Xperia Z handset.
- Handset Start-Up Guide.
- Charger plug connector.
- USB cable.
- Earphones.
- Spare ear buds.
How to insert your microSIM
- Place the phone on a sturdy surface.
- Locate the flap on the right-hand side of the handset.
- Using the groove pop the microSIM cover open.
- Pull out the plastic microSIM vessel.
- Insert the microSIM into the vessel.
- Place the vessel with microSIM back into the slot.
- Reinsert SIM tray into handset.
- Close the flap and push in to secure.
How to insert your microSD card
- Place the phone on a sturdy surface.
- Locate the flap on the left-hand side of the handset.
- Using the groove pop the microSD cover open.
- Insert the microSD card into the slot.
- Push it in until it clicks into place.
- Close the flap and push in to secure.
How to charge your phone
- Unravel USB charging cable.
- Lift top prong of USB plug connector and lift until it clicks into position.
- Take the large end of the USB cable and insert into port on plug connector.
- Locate the USB port flap on the left hand side of the handset and open it.
- Take the small end of the USB cable and insert into USB connector on the device.
- Locate plug and insert plug connector into socket.
- Flick socket switch to “On” position.
Or:
- Unravel USB charging cable.
- Insert the large end into USB slot on a laptop/PC.
- Locate the USB port flap on the left hand side of the handset and open it.
- Insert the small USB end into the USB slot on the device.
How to set up your phone
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock the device.
- Select your preferred language from the list.
- Tap Done.
- Tick the box to say you have read the Important Information and tap the right arrow to start the setup process.
- Select your preferred Data Connection Option.
- Tap the right arrow.
- Tap Yes to download settings for Internet and Multimedia Messaging or Not Now to skip this step.
- Tap the right arrow.
- Set the time and date by tapping Change and then selecting the options to set date and time.
- Tap Done.
- Tap the right arrow.
- If you want to connect to Wi-Fi tap Search For Networks and select your chosen network form the list and tap Done.
- To do this later tap the right arrow.
- If you wish to set up an account with the Sony Entertainment Network tap Get Started.
- To do this later tap the right arrow.
- To sign in to Google, Facebook, Twitter or Exchange ActiveSync, tap the relevant name and fill in the details required.
- To set up automatic syncing with your accounts move the slider at the top of the screen to the right.
- Tap the right-hand arrow.
- To conclude tap Finish.
- Read disclaimer and if you agree, tap Accept.
- Read Usage Info and if you agree, tap Agree.
How to change the language on your phone
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock.
- Tap on the App Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll Down the Settings Menu.
- Tap Language & Input.
- Tap Language and select the Language you wish to use.
- Tap OK.

What’s the latest software available for my phone?
The Sony Xperia Z runs the Android Jelly Bean operating system.
How to update your phone’s software
- Press the power button and swipe the screen up or down to unlock device.
- Tap on the App Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll Down the Settings Menu.
- Tap About Phone.
- Tap Software Update and the device will tell you if any new software is available.
- To install any updates follow the onscreen instructions.
How to perform a factory reset
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the App Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Backup & Reset.
- Tap Factory Data Reset.
- If you also wish to erase internal data storage tick the box next to Erase Internal Storage
- Tap Reset Phone.
- Tap Erase Everything.

How to set up a Google account
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock.
- Tap the App Menu icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Add Account.
- Press Add Account.
- Tap Google from the menu.
- If you already have a Google account tap Existing, otherwise tap New to create a new account.
- Enter your first name and last name.
- Tap the right arrow.
- Enter your desired username and tap the right hand arrow.
- If the username is already taken enter an alternative one and tap Try Again.
- Tap Next.
- Enter a recovery email address and security question and tap Next.
- Select whether you are interested in joining Google+.
- Read the Terms of Service and tap I Accept if you agree.
- Type code you can see in white box to authentitate account.
- Tap Next.
- Enter card details to enable purchases from the Google Play store or tap Skip to enter at a later date.
- Tap Next.
- Read the terms and conditions and tap I Accept.
- Move Accounts and Sync slider to the On position.
How to set up an email account
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Add Account.
- Tap Email.
- Enter the email address associated with your email account.
- Tap Next to enter the password associated with your email account.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Next.
- Adjust Account Settings according to your requirements.
- Tap Next.
- Enter Name for your mailbox and tap Next.
- Enter name you want to appear on outgoing emails.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Next.
How to send an email
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.

- Tap the Email icon.
- Tap the New Email icon (this looks like a + and a small pencil).
- Enter your chosen recipient in the To bar.
- Enter the subject of the email in the Subject bar.
- Enter your message in the email body.
- Tap the Send icon (this looks like an envelope with an arrow) to send the email.
How to send an attachment in an email
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap the Email icon.
- Tap the New Email icon (this looks like a + and a small pencil).
- Enter your chosen recipient in the To bar.
- Enter the subject of the email in the Subject bar.
- Enter your message in the email body.
- Tap the Paperclip icon to attach your file.
- Select the type of file you would like to attach.
- Tap the file you wish to attach.
- Tap the Send icon (this looks like an envelope with an arrow) to send the email.
How to save an attachment
- Press power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap the Email icon.
- Tap the email with the attachment you want to save.
- Tap the Paperclip icon at the top of the email.
- Tap Save next to the attachment you wish to save.
How to delete a mailbox
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Email.
- Tap the Options tab (this looks like three dots stacked on top of each other).
- Tap Remove Account, and then Remove Account.
How to set up social network feeds
- Press power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings and then Add Account.
- Tap the name of the social network you wish to sign up to.
- Enter the username or email address attached to your account.
- Enter password attached to your account.
Does my phone have an app store?
Yes, the Sony Xperia Z is serviced by the Google Play store.
How to download an app
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Google Play icon from the homescreen.
- If you do not have a Google account tap New and follow the onscreen instructions.
- If you have a Google account tap Existing.
- Enter your Google account email address and password.
- Tap the right hand arrow and tap OK.
- Enter card details to set up payment information or to do this at a later date, tap Not Now.
- If you wish to back up your handset to your Google account tick the box and tap the right hand arrow.
- Locate and tap on the app you wish to download.
- Tap Install.
- Tap Accept & Download to begin the process.
- Swipe down to reveal the notification bar to view download progress.
- Once download and install is complete tap on the app name in the notification bar to open it.
How to close an app
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock.
- Tap the Task Manager button on the bottom right of the handset (this looks like two squares stacked on top of each other).
- Swipe any open apps to the left or right to close them.
How to delete/uninstall an app
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen to open the app menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app you wish to delete and tap Uninstall.
- Tap OK.
- Tap OK to return to the menu.

How to pair your phone with another Bluetooth device
- Press power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings from the app menu.
- Move the Bluetooth slider to the On position.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the device you wish to pair with.
- Tap Pair to send pairing request.
- Check the passkeys match on both devices and then tap Pair.
How to turn off Bluetooth
- Press the power button and swipe up or down the screen to unlock device.
- Tap the Apps Menu icon from the homescreen.
- Tap Settings from the app menu.
- Move the Bluetooth slider to the Off position.
How to connect your phone to your computer

- Press the power button and swipe the camera icon from the right to the left to unlock directly into the camera.
- Line up your shot and tap the Shutter button to capture the image.
How to capture a video
- Press the power button and swipe the camera icon from the right to the left to unlock directly into the camera.
- Tap the Video record button to start recording.
- Press again to stop recording.
How to turn the camera flash on and off
- Press the power button and swipe the camera icon from the right to the left to unlock directly into the camera.
- Tap the lightning bolt icon and select your flash preference from the menu.
How to view the pictures or videos you’ve taken
